Is Tartar Control Toothpaste Good for the Teeth?

Posted on 1/11/2021 by Tiny Teeth Pediatric Dentistry
Is Tartar Control Toothpaste Good for the Teeth?Do you have problems with plaque or tartar build-up? Some patients say they have this problem even when they brush their teeth regularly. Therefore, they often wonder if they will benefit from using a tartar control toothpaste.

Is the Use of a Tartar Control Toothpaste Beneficial?

The key to stopping tartar is to get to the plaque first. However, that does not mean you should shun using a tartar-control toothpaste approved by the ADA. According to the site, healthline, one study showed that using a tartar-control toothpaste caused participants to realize a 35% improvement in the removal of calculus. The research compared using a tartar control toothpaste to a toothpaste which only contained fluoride. To ensure more plaque removal, which eventually hardens to a cement-like buildup of tartar, it can help to brush with a toothpaste with baking soda, which is slightly abrasive. However, the amount of abrasion caused by baking soda will not erode the enamel. Therefore, baking soda has been proven safe to use as an ingredient in toothpastes.

Can You Use Charcoal to Combat Tartar Build-up?

Some patients want to know if you can use charcoal-based toothpastes to remove tartar. However, research published in the Journal of the American Dental Association suggests these types of toothpastes have not been proven to be safe or effective. Therefore, it is better not to use them at all. To reduce tartar build-up, it is best to control plaque by brushing twice daily and flossing at least once a day for 2 minutes at a time.
