When Can My Child Begin Using Regular Toothpaste

Posted on 11/21/2022 by Tiny Teeth Pediatric Dentistry
When Can My Child Begin Using Regular ToothpasteWhile cleaning teeth begins just after the first tooth erupts, many parents are usually curious as to when they can introduce their young one to the regular toothpaste that is used by adults. What type of toothpaste is suitable for your child depends on whether the child can spit all the toothpaste and has stopped swallowing it. For the safety of your child, do not switch them to fluoride toothpaste until they gain the ability to spit.

Since every child is different, there is no definite deadline to switch, but many children are ready for this transition once they turn 6 years old. You can consult our pediatric dentist for informed suggestions that are tailored to your child.

Oral hygiene for kids

From around the age of one when the teeth start erupting, brushing your little one's teeth without using toothpaste is completely fine, and it will lower the chances of baby bottle tooth decay. As a parent, it would be best that you ensure pacifiers and bottles are not used for so long to where they become a habit.

From around the age of 2-5 years, a small amount of non-fluoridated toothpaste is ideal for use. You should teach your child how to correctly brush their teeth, and be sure to remind them that they should always spit out and rinse their mouth. As we mentioned earlier, as soon as your child has mastered spitting once they are done brushing, you can transition to regular toothpaste.

Regardless of the age of your child, they should brush at least twice a day and floss regularly. This will effectively prevent their teeth from decaying and ensure that they have healthy gums. In addition, schedule routine visits with us to monitor the overall oral development of your child's teeth.

If you have any questions or concerns about your kid's oral health, reach out to us or schedule an appointment. Our dedicated team will be happy to serve you to make sure your child has optimal oral health!
