Signs and Causes of Gum Disease in Kids

Posted on 12/23/2021 by Tiny Teeth Pediatric Dentistry
Signs and Causes of Gum Disease in KidsGum disease, which is also known as gingivitis or periodontal disease, is an infection that occurs in the gums, deep inside the bones and the tissues responsible for supporting your teeth. If left untreated, the gum disease can become even more serious, leading to weaknesses and cavities in all teeth.

Our mouths are responsible for the buildup of a sticky surface known as plaque. The excessive buildup of plaque in the mouth can lead to gum disease, as toxins produced by it can cause infections in the gum. The toxins present inside plaque can break down the tissues responsible for holding your child's teeth in place.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease is primarily caused by poor oral health and hygiene within children. Other common causes for this occurrence include use of excessive medications, diabetes, a poor diet, tobacco use and genetic predisposition. Most gum diseases begin as a simple case of gingivitis, which can infiltrate and ameliorate if left untreated for an excessive period of time.

The Signs of Gum Disease

Since gum diseases often exist without causing any instant pain or discomfort, it is important for parents to keep an eye out on potential. Study these signs and visit an experienced professional if you witness any red flags. Look for the following signs:

•  Gums appear red or swollen to the naked eye.
•  Gums feel unusually tender than before
•  Gums that bleed during flossing or brushing.
•  Receding gums, pulling away from the teeth.
•  Persistent bad breath that will not go away at all.
•  Loose teeth that look like they can easily be pulled away from the gum. Also a sign of a receding gum.
