Where Does Tooth Decay Occur Most Often In Kids?

Nearly 90% of both children and adults have at least one cavity in their lifetimes. If children have tooth decay, they can suffer from infections, lost baby teeth, and damaged or discolored permanent teeth. There are lots of places tooth decay can occur in children. Keep reading to find the most common spots for tooth decay in children.

Front Four Teeth

In babies and very young children, the most often location for tooth decay is in the front four teeth in their mouths- two in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw. These are usually the first teeth that erupt in children. One of the most common causes for tooth decay in these front four teeth is a baby carrying a sippy cup or a bottle to bed, especially if the bottle has juice or another sugary drink inside; the child is allowing sugar, which feeds the bacteria of tooth decay, to remain on their mouths through the night. To combat this problem, don't let your baby or toddler have a cup or bottle in bed. Also, be sure that however many teeth your child has, you are brushing them twice a day.

Molars

In older children, tooth decay occurs most often in the molars. There are several reasons tooth decay occurs in molars. First, molars are located at the back of your mouth, which makes them difficult to reach with a toothbrush. Also, because molars are so large, their biting surface is large as well, with lots of pits and grooves for chewing. Food can become trapped in these areas. If your child isn't brushing or flossing properly, bacteria can begin to form. Over time, the bacteria can make holes in your teeth, which are called cavities. If you aren't sure your kids are brushing or flossing their teeth properly, or you worry that one of your children might have a cavity, reach out and contact a dental practitioner as soon as possible.
