Developing Good Brushing Habits For Kids

Because tooth decay and gum disease are tied to heart issues, inflammation in the body, and problems with diabetes, it is so important that kids get into a brushing routine early. Here are some reasons kids need to develop good brushing habits early and how you can help them.

Why Is Good Brushing So Important?

When kids don't brush their teeth, they may suffer from tooth decay, which not only impacts their baby teeth but can impact their permanent teeth as well- even if they haven't come in yet. If a child's tooth decay is bad enough, they may be missing permanent teeth because the teeth just won't come in.

Developing Good Brushing Habits

Developing good brushing habits early means your children will have good dental health throughout their lives. Not sure how to begin? Here are some ideas.

You can actually begin working on your child's dental health before they even get their first teeth. When your child is an infant, you can begin cleaning their mouth out with a damp washcloth after each feeding. This activity will get them used to taking care of their mouths. Once your child begins to get teeth, you can start brushing them with a toothbrush for babies and a tiny amount of toothpaste.

One of the best ways you can be a good example for your child is to let them see you brush and floss each day. That way, when it comes time to brush and floss on their own, they will have you as a role model. Give your younger kids a chance to brush their teeth with you at least once daily. You may want to think about developing a reward system for brushing and flossing, such as including it on their chore charts. That way, your children realize how important brushing and flossing are.
