Talking To Your Teens About The Harm Of E-Cigarettes On Dental Health]

Vaping devices such as e-cigarettes have become popular among young people. Many kids see vaping as just a harmless, fun social experience, however, there are dangers associated with it. There are many vaping products in candies, desserts, and fruit flavors, making kids believe that it's a great way for them to be 'cool'. Unfortunately, e-cigarettes in teens are a public health concern because tobacco use in early teen years can result in nicotine addiction. It can also increase the risk of cancer, including oral cancer.

Starting the Conservation

Talking about tobacco use with your teen is not easy; therefore you should arm yourself with the right information and facts about e-cigarettes. Also set a good example, by stopping the use of tobacco. It is a positive way to make your kids understand the dangers it causes.

Make the conversation as natural as possible. Tell the kid that you need to talk with them. But don't just rush things, wait for the ideal moment to present itself such as when you see an e-cigarette ad or after you pass by an e-cigarette shop, or see someone vaping one. You can also ask other people for support such as teachers, relatives, counselors, and healthcare professionals like dentists to get the message reinforced. Let the kids know that e-cigarettes are just as harmful as normal cigarettes.

Keep the conversation alive and going because you may not be able to cover everything regarding the dangers of e-cigarettes in just one talk. If the kid admits to having gotten into e-cigs with friends, don't immediately jump on their case. Try to work things out step-by-step and keep open the lines of communication. As you work hard to get the kid out of the habit, make sure they come to our dental office for checkups as well as cleanings. We can screen them for mouth cancer and clean their gums and teeth.
