How Can I Talk About Cavities With My Kids?No parent wants to talk to their kids about mistakes, but it is inevitable. Your child may be perfect to you, but there is no way to be perfect all the time. You and your child may have been working very hard on your dental health- and while that is excellent, mistakes can and do occur in the form of cavities. Here are some ways to talk to your child about what cavities are and how to prevent them.

What Are Cavities?

Cavities are actually the result of bacteria. This bacteria is always present in your mouth and actually helps you break food down to digest. You rid your mouth of bacteria by brushing and flossing daily. However, if you don't brush and floss correctly, bacteria can sit on your teeth. Over time, the bacteria can eat a hole in your tooth, and it is this hole that is called a cavity. If you don't get the cavity treated, the bacteria will continue to eat into your tooth until it reaches the center of your tooth, called the pulp. If the cavity isn't treated, you may eventually lose the tooth.

How to Prevent Cavities

Once your child gets a cavity, it's time to prepare them for that dental visit, and also to help them brush and floss more effectively. First, if the cavity is caught early, it will be simple to fill it. The dentist will numb the tooth, take out the infection, and fill the tooth so that it will be protected from further damage. Second, if the child can learn to brush and floss effectively, they can minimize their risk of cavities. Make sure they are brushing their teeth for at least two minutes each time.

Dental visits can also cut down on the risk of cavities. A dentist will be able to tell how effectively your child is brushing their teeth and whether there are particular teeth they miss each time they brush. With a little help, you can assist your child with better dental habits and a healthier mouth overall.
