What Milestones Should I Watch For My Child's Teeth?

Parents love growth and development milestones. These milestones help parents to determine where their children are developing relative to other children their own age. While parents are well aware of where their children are with regard to their height and weight, they may not know there are also dental milestones. These milestones can help parents make sure their children are on track toward great dental health.
Dental Milestones for Babies
One question parents often ask is, “When will my baby get their first tooth?” The answer may surprise you because many infants begin to cut their baby teeth between six months and one year of age. Some babies get teeth at four months, while other babies don't begin to have teeth erupt until past their first birthday.
Once your child's first tooth erupts, you will need to take them to the dentist, so they can examine your child's mouth and talk to you about good dental health for your baby. What if your child turns one without getting a tooth? Time to make an appointment with a dental practitioner anyway because those little teeth will be coming in soon.
What About Permanent Teeth?
Like the milestone of the first tooth, there is no set age for first tooth loss. Many children can lose their first baby tooth at 4, but other children won't lose their first tooth until first grade. Between the ages of 4 and 14, your child will get up to 28 teeth. If you make sure you take your child to a dentist twice a year, the dentist will be able to update you on their progress. The dentist can also tell you if he or she is seeing additional problems in their oral health, such as improper brushing and flossing.
It is a good idea to emphasize the importance of oral health with your children. By keeping track of their brushing and flossing habits as well as their dental milestones, you are working to give them a lifetime of good oral health.
