Flossing Guide For Kids

Posted on 3/20/2023 by Tiny Teeth Pediatric Dentistry
Flossing Guide For KidsResearch shows that flossing is one of the best ways to guard against tooth decay and gum disease by getting rid of trapped food and plaque. While research shows that flossing is excellent preventative care, only about 30% of Americans floss at least once a day. If you want your children to floss their teeth, you're going to have to help them learn how to floss properly. This will set them up for a lifetime of great dental health. Here are some pointers that parents can use to help their children learn how to floss.

How Can I Get My Kids to Floss?

Flossing is very important because it helps your mouth get rid of excess food and bacteria in your mouth. It is that bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease in both children and adults. Children often find flossing hard to manage, especially if they are young. Here are some tips for great flossing.

Let your children pick their own floss. In the past, children were stuck with two flavors of floss: mint and plain. However, now there are all kinds of floss for children, with different colors and flavors. You may also want to show your kids flossers, which may be easier for them to manage with their smaller hands and fingers.

Play a flossing game with your kids. One of the great things about being a parent is that you can make chores a fun game for kids. You can floss with your child in the mirror and make goofy faces, use silly voices, or even sing while you floss. Making it a game for your kids also makes flossing fun.

Give them rewards. You might want to make a flossing chart for your kids. The more days in a row they floss, the larger the reward for them. You may want to teach them to bank their points to get a bigger prize or have them redeem their flossing points each month. Eventually, your kids won't need much incentive to floss.
